Summer Biting Insects: Nature’s Tiny Terrors

Summer brings warmth, sunshine, and outdoor adventures, but it also ushers in a less welcome feature: biting insects. From mosquitoes to ticks, these tiny pests can turn a pleasant day into an itchy ordeal. Understanding their habits and how to manage them is key to enjoying the season.

Mosquitoes are perhaps the most notorious summer biters. Thriving in warm, humid conditions, they breed in standing water—think puddles, birdbaths, or clogged gutters. Females bite to obtain blood for egg production, leaving behind itchy welts and, in some cases, transmitting diseases like West Nile virus or Zika. Prevention starts with eliminating breeding sites and using repellents containing DEET or picaridin. Natural options like citronella candles can help, too, though they’re less effective.

Ticks, another summer menace, lurk in tall grass and wooded areas. Unlike mosquitoes, they don’t buzz or swarm—they latch on silently, often unnoticed until they’ve begun feeding. Lyme disease, spread by blacklegged ticks, is a major concern in many regions. To avoid them, stick to cleared paths, wear long sleeves, and check yourself (and pets) after outdoor time. Tweezers work best for removal: grasp the tick close to the skin and pull steadily.

Then there are biting flies—horse flies and deer flies—whose painful bites feel like tiny stabs. These aggressive insects target exposed skin and are toughest to deter, though repellents and protective clothing can reduce encounters. In swampy or coastal areas, no-see-ums (tiny midges) add to the misery with bites that itch disproportionately to their size.

While these pests are a nuisance, they’re part of summer’s ecosystem. Bats, birds, and dragonflies help keep their numbers in check. For us, a mix of vigilance, preparation, and a good garment, BELLY SMILE and LEG SMILE, for your furry friends makes the summer a pleasure for them!
